Perfumer

“Saffron's symbolism is incredibly rich. In antiquity, it embodied sensuality and exquisite pleasure. In India, it represents luck, and suggests color, wealth, joy, and opulence simultaneously. Creating imagery around saffron means telling all these stories at once. For Ambre Safrano, I adorned it with amber's gilded fineries to heighten its preciousness. Sandalwood, vanilla, and oakwood contribute to crafting its enhanced leather essence.” Julien Rasquinet

SAFFRON

The Red Gold of Perfumers
In the world of perfumery, saffron is a vibrant, rare and precious material whose warm, luminous fragrance has travelled across civilizations. Patiently extracted from the stigmas of Crocus sativus, this spice reveals an enigmatic, contrasting scent, at once spicy, leathery, almost honeyed.
Saffron embodies the meeting of the sacred and the sensual, offering a noble raw material capable of infusing creations with mysterious depth. Its olfactory signature tells the story of a millennia-old heritage, a pursuit of excellence, and a fascination with rare beauty.

From sun-scorched lands to the earliest perfumed uses
Born in the heart of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern lands, saffron has symbolized wealth and power since Antiquity. Harvested at dawn to preserve its fragrance, it was already considered an exceptional spice, used to perfume baths, fabrics, and sacred oils. In the palaces of Persia, India, and Alexandria, its warm, enveloping effluvia transformed textiles into true objects of luxury.

Mystical and precious: saffron through the centuries
Saffron has long been at the center of rituals. The Greeks associated it with divine light, the Romans with seduction, and Eastern civilizations with sacred hospitality. In marketplaces, it was sometimes worth more than gold. Its nickname, “red gold,” endures to this day, reflecting both its rarity and its powerful olfactory presence.

The revival of saffron in perfumery: between warmth and modernity
It was not until the late 20th century that perfumers restored saffron to its rightful place at the heart of niche creations. This unexpected note captivates with its singular contrast: luminous yet dark, spicy and leathery, soft yet intense.
Some creators pair it with ambered or resinous woods to enhance its depth; others blend it with rose or oud to create opulent, sensual, luxurious accords. Saffron becomes a bridge between Eastern heritage and Western modernity.

Saffron today: a warm radiance for free-spirited creations
In contemporary perfumery, saffron offers an infinite olfactory palette, balancing sensuality and character. An iconic material in modern, genderless fragrances, it enhances minimalist creations as much as opulent compositions. Saffron envelops niche perfumes in a sensual, mysterious aura.
