Perfumer
“My goal was to blend a precious vanilla pod with a bouquet of white flowers, gradually unveiling its warm and sensual character. Thus, the vanilla note is enhanced by the sulfurous and slightly honeyed tones of tuberose, the powerful sweetness of jasmine, and the round, carnal notes of orange blossom. To further intensify the fragrance trail, I incorporated oak wood and patchouli notes.” Dominique Ropion

In perfumery, leather is not a raw material but an accord, shaped by human hands and refined through olfactory memory. Born from the alchemy between artisanal tradition and creative perfumery, the leather accord evokes both the noble heritage of ancient workshops and the contemporary boldness of niche fragrances. Powerful, sophisticated, almost tactile, it tells a story: one of transformation, craftsmanship, and the pursuit of timeless elegance.
From tanneries to the first perfumes
At its origin, leather was far from enticing. Its raw, animalic scent needed to be tamed. In Grasse, then celebrated for its tanners, artisans began perfuming hides with floral essences to soften the harsh aroma of the tanning process. This practice gave rise to the art of scented leather, an olfactory signature in which a once-humble material became precious.
The influence of a queen, the birth of an icon
Under the influence of Catherine de’ Medici, a refined and influential figure of the Renaissance, perfumed gloves became luxurious accessories of power, allure, and seduction. Their popularity grew so great that they crossed borders, leading to the creation of the prestigious guild of glove-makers-perfumers, an institution that would leave a lasting imprint on the history of French perfumery.
The rediscovery of leather
Leather would not return to the heart of perfume creation until the late 19th century, when a visionary perfumer found inspiration in an unexpected world: the scent of the polished boots of Russian horsemen and ballet dancers, a blend of power, grace, and mystery. Their ritual involved treating leather with burnt birch essences, enriched with notes of tobacco, liquorice, and tar. This dark, captivating trail mesmerised the most discerning noses. Leather became the emblem of an androgynous, daring, liberated elegance, an olfactory signature that defied convention.
Leather today: an infinite palette of sensations
In contemporary perfumery, the leather accord is constantly reinvented. Sensual, enigmatic, or subtly animalic, it offers an elegant intensity perfectly suited to creations beyond gender. A true material of character, it infuses niche fragrances with a distinctive aura, balancing power with absolute refinement.
